Math 25 Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of Basic Mathematics Applications,
Math
25, the student should be able to:
- Apply critical thinking skills to reading, interpreting, and
questioning data presented in graphic and tabular form in
everyday
newspapers and magazines.
- Interpret the elementary probability and statistics used in
newspapers and magazines, with an emphasis on daily health and
local and global issues.
- Read and use measuring tools for length, weight, capacity,
temperature, speed, and rates in the context of household, yard
and
garden, health, and daily living.
- Apply concepts and formulas for area, perimeter, weights, and
volume to practical problems and within project settings.
- Apply percent computation to problems involving personal
finance, planning, and daily living.
- Apply ideas of ratio and proportion to practical problems and
projects including travel, recreation, household, yard and
garden.
- Apply, explore, and identify appropriate uses for large and
small numbers related to real data such as national debt,
population, pollutants and other local and world issues.
- Use signed numbers in practical applications such as
temperature, checking accounts, and the stock market.
- Convert mathematical information related to the home or work
into appropriate symbolic, graphical, tabular or verbal forms.
- Use appropriate technology to enhance thinking,
understanding,
critical thinking, and problem solving skills. Judge the
reasonableness of a computer or calculator result.
- Estimate and mentally calculate problems involving everyday
mathematics.
- Work in groups to plan, research, explore, and report on
projects.
- Communicate mathematical results and conclusions effectively
