Math 25 Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of Basic Mathematics Applications, Math 25, the student should be able to:

  1. Apply critical thinking skills to reading, interpreting, and questioning data presented in graphic and tabular form in everyday newspapers and magazines.

  2. Interpret the elementary probability and statistics used in newspapers and magazines, with an emphasis on daily health and local and global issues.

  3. Read and use measuring tools for length, weight, capacity, temperature, speed, and rates in the context of household, yard and garden, health, and daily living.

  4. Apply concepts and formulas for area, perimeter, weights, and volume to practical problems and within project settings.

  5. Apply percent computation to problems involving personal finance, planning, and daily living.

  6. Apply ideas of ratio and proportion to practical problems and projects including travel, recreation, household, yard and garden.

  7. Apply, explore, and identify appropriate uses for large and small numbers related to real data such as national debt, population, pollutants and other local and world issues.

  8. Use signed numbers in practical applications such as temperature, checking accounts, and the stock market.

  9. Convert mathematical information related to the home or work into appropriate symbolic, graphical, tabular or verbal forms.

  10. Use appropriate technology to enhance thinking, understanding, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. Judge the reasonableness of a computer or calculator result.

  11. Estimate and mentally calculate problems involving everyday mathematics.

  12. Work in groups to plan, research, explore, and report on projects.

  13. Communicate mathematical results and conclusions effectively in written and oral form.
